Lotus developing efficient two-stroke OMNIVORE engine
August 13, 2008 by Terence

Lotus has been working hard to develop engines that use sustainable alcohol fuels or biofuel. It’s recent Exige 270E Tri-Fuel concept has an engine that can run on a variety of fuels, including gasoline, ethanol and methanol. And as a result the 270E Tri-Fuel is the most powerful Exige ever developed by Lotus when using synthetic methanol fuel. The OMNIVORE engine that Lotus is developing now uses a single cylinder with direct injection and a variable compression ratio in order to maximize power and efficiency while being capable of running on just about any sort of biofuel. The high octane rating of biofuels will allow the engine to run with higher compression, which offers more power, but with the ability to lower compression to allow running on lower-grade fuels as well.
Will we be seeing a new biofuel Campro engine in a Proton soon? Not likely but as Lotus is currently owned by Proton, don’t be surprise if we see a new biofuel Persona or Saga some time in the future.
